A Brief History of STiK Hockey

The club has an interesting history starting from the parking lot of the STK Longmont facility in 1994. In line skating evolved as did our participants, several more people began to show up in the Longmont parking lot with their plastic goals and ball stopping gizmos.

STK closed the Longmont facility in 1995 and moved everyone down to Louisville. Some time was spent playing on the newly vacated helicopter pad, and eventually we migrated east to the old basketball courts. Some weed pulling, cement patching and temporary 6 inch "boards" proved to be enough to increase member interest and sell the Wellness Center on the need to expand our "hockey rink".

In May of 1997 a 155' X 85' asphalt surface was paved over the old basketball court. The paving was followed closely by the original concept, design and construction of "The STiK", StorageTek's in-line rink. The rink was built entirely with volunteer help using reclaimed doors!

Summer of 1997 saw our first STK sponsored hockey league which fielded 3 teams.

The STK Hockey Club was officially established in February 1998.

By spring 2000, our doors were weathering rapidly, and became a safety hazard. Ben Fisketjon, our Wellness Center liason, championed a set of real radiused outdoor hockey boards, AND an acrylic top coat to smooth out our surface. This project was completed in August of 2000.

The league has now flourished to hold 8 teams that play year 'round on the STiK.
