League Rules | Captains | Player Substitution | Equipment | Penalties

We basically play by the official inline rules posted at USA Hockey, with the following additions:
League Rules
  • Maximum of 7 players allowed per team (including the goalie).
  • Format is 3 skaters plus one goalie (or additional skater) on the rink at any given time.
  • Players participating in Div-A may only play the position for which they were drafted (i.e. a Div-A goalie drafted in Div-B as a skater may not play the position of goalie in Div-B)
  • If the score is within 2 goals, the game clock will convert to stop time during the last 2 minutes of regulation play.
  • Any league official may call extra timeouts during the game for health, safety or environmental reasons.
  • The league committee may eject any player from the league for poor sportsmanship or dangerous play.
Captains' Responsibilities
  • Above all else, help promote a spirit of healthy competition and fair play, making the league fun for everybody.
  • Attend the Draft and select players for the upcoming season.
  • Prior to the early game, set up the clock and goals. After the late game, put away the clock and police the area around the benches to make sure all equipment has been stored in the shed. Lock up the goals and the shed.
  • Recruit subs when necessary (see Player Substitution rules below).
  • Request forfeit if opposing captain cannot field enough players and there are not enough subs on hand to fill in.
  • Report final score of games to league statistician (Kyallee Dalrymple) as soon as possible after completion of games. (Note: Also communicate whether the game ended in regulation or overtime)
  • Act as intermediary in any dispute between players and referee. Communicate any complaints to the league director.
  • If requested, nominate players for post-season awards and/or recognition.
Player Substitution
  • Substitute recruiting is performed by captains. If there are not enough substitutes to field a team, the game is forfeited.
  • A maximum of 2 substitute skaters and a substitute goalie are permitted for any given game.
  • Players substituting in ANY league game must be ranked equivalent to or lower than the player thay are substituing for. The league organizers will send out a ranking list to all captains at the beginning of the season to be used as the basis for substitutions.
  • Goalie Subs: Only B-level goalies (or low A-level goalies, as approved by the league) may substitute in net in a B-level game.
Equipment

The following equipment is required:

  • Hockey Helmet (face guard is mandatory - either a full face cage or a half shield)
  • Knee pads, with full shin guards
  • Elbow pads
  • Hockey gloves
The referee will strictly enforce this rule, so make sure you have this equipment when you show up to play.

Other gear that's not a bad idea:

  • Cup, or pelvic protector
  • Mouthguard
Penalties

There are several rules specific to the StorageTek Hockey Leagues which players need to be aware of:

  • Unsportsmanlike Conduct - The referee reserves the right to call a player for unsportsmanlike conduct if the player verbally abuses the referee. The player serves 10 minutes, there is no power play. If the offense occurs towards the end of a game, the referee may also call a minor penalty.
  • Game Conduct - The referee reserves the right to eject a player for egregious misconduct if deemed necessary. The ejection will be reported to the hockey club officers who review such events on a case-by-case basis and issues furhter suspensions if appropriate.
  • The Chen Take-Out Rule - After a goal or a goalie freeze, the ball starts behind the end-line. The defensive team may not cross the mid-line until either the ball crosses the end-line, or a player on the opposing team crosses the mid-line. Any attempt to delay the game by holding the ball behind the end-line for more that 5 seconds will result in a delay of game penalty.
  • Charging/Roughing - A charging or roughing penalty will be called by the referee after a collision if the referee judges that a player made no attempt to avoid the collision. Determining factor will be whether the player makes some overt movement (turning skates, body, shoulders) to try and avoid the collision.
  • Slashing of an opponent's stick shall be subject to a minor penalty.
  • Disputes - There will be ZERO TOLERANCE for questioning officials. Players questioning the official without going through their team captain (or captain designee) are subject to a minor misconduct penalty. Further questioning can result in a 10 minute and/or game misconduct penalty. Verbal abuse of the official by any player (including the captain) is subject to 1 or more misconduct penalties. It is recommended that players who wish to question an official's call convince their team captain (or designee) to discuss the situation with the official. Complaints about the official can only be taken up with the league director (Ben).
  • Penalties will be served on the penalized player's team bench. The penalized player is not eligible to return to play until the penalty period has expired. After the penalty is served, either the penalized player or a teammate may return to play.
